Find Your Purpose In Life in Just 6 Steps
We’re obsessed with finding our purpose in life. We know that the moment we do, everything will just feel right. We’ll stop feeling like we’re paddling against the current, trying our hardest just to survive. We’ll start thriving.
Finding your purpose seems like the hardest thing in the world, but it doesn’t have to be. With time, patience, and an open mind, we’ll show you exactly how to find what makes you tick so you can start living a fulfilled life in the direction that aligns with your soul.
Help, I’m lost, and I’ll never find my way in life!
If people donated a penny every time they thought this about themselves, we could fund a whole country! There is a strong desire to understand the meaning of life and live towards that goal. Anything less than that is a life unfulfilled.
Here’s a secret, though: there is no one over-arching meaning of life. And trying to find it will only make you miserable.
Instead, you need to work out what makes sense to you. Only then will you be able to find your purpose and live a fulfilled life.
Benefits of finding your purpose in life
The benefits of finding your life’s purpose are life-changing. You shouldn’t underestimate the peace it can bring you. Here are three ways your life will change for the better once you find purpose:
-
It gives you a sense of direction
Life pulls us in all directions, and without purpose, we don’t know which way to go. And while there’s no one right way to approach life, once you find your purpose in life, you’ll understand better what works for you and what doesn’t, giving you the power to move in a direction that aligns with you.
-
It changes your perception of the world
When you understand what you have to offer the world and what it has to give back to you, you will be better equipped to approach life with a “glass half full” mentality.
And seeing the world as a place full of opportunity and clarity brings a strong sense of peace.
-
It gives you self-confidence
Not knowing what you want to do with your life is a leading cause of anxiety and low self-esteem. So it should come as no surprise that in finding your purpose in life, your self-belief and confidence will soar.
Six steps to find your purpose in life
-
Make a list of what makes you happy and unhappy
Before you can find your purpose in life, you need to understand who you are as a person. And that means not only knowing what makes you happy but also what makes you unhappy.
In your journal, start a list for each, and put everything you typically do in your day in one of the lists.
Once you’ve done that, try and find a common theme. For example, do you find happiness in certain social situations (and if so, which ones?). Does the monotony of your job have you banging your head against the wall? Is that because you don’t like the work, or you don’t like the repetition?
Narrow down your list into themes, and then start trying to work out where you can find more of what you like and adapt what you don’t to make it more palatable.
-
Read more
Reading offers you the opportunity to be a fly on the wall without leaving your house. Whether it’s a romance novel, poem, newspaper, or blog post, reading helps you challenge your view of the world and open your mind.
And in opening your mind, you’ll find more fulfilment in your daily life, adapting your new learnings in a way that fits your natural rhythm.
-
Get feedback from your loved ones
No one can see into your mind except you. But sometimes, we are in so deep that we don’t notice certain behaviours or reactions we have. And those very things could help you understand what brings purpose to your life.
So why not ask the people around you what they think you are good at and what they see brings you happiness? It’s excellent research to help you level up and find your purpose!
-
Try new things
Imagine if you’d never tried chocolate before? You wouldn’t know the incredible taste you’re missing out on. (Unless you’re one of the few people in the world that don’t like chocolate – sorry!)
The point is, you can’t know what you want (or don’t want) until you experience more of life. And that means actively searching out new experiences and learning from them.
So, sign up to that class, join that group, and dare to try the things that scare you. You never know how much your life can benefit from it.
-
Practice gratitude
Living your life with gratitude is a good way to find purpose in your life. When you realise that life is something you participate in, not just something that happens to you, it empowers you to live more purposefully.
So start every morning writing three to five things you are grateful for, and watch your mindset shift.
-
Travel more
There’s only so much you can learn from the comfort of your backyard. To expand your horizons, you need to literally expand them! That means travelling and seeing what else is out there in the world. Embracing new cultures and learning how different people interact.
When you become a citizen of the world, your inner world becomes much richer.
Final thoughts
Setting out to find purpose in your life can feel daunting, but as with many things, simple steps make a big difference. And starting with these six steps will allow you to begin the process.
Once you align yourself with your purpose, the internal blocks and frustrations you faced feeling unsure of your direction will melt away, and you’ll feel a new peace that will drive your joie de vivre.
